DAN BRAY: ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dan Bray founded The Villain’s Theatre in 2009 after the realization that he would never be able to work on his favourite early-modern plays if he did not found The Villain’s Theatre. He is inspired by ghost stories and fairy tales; he likes movies about the theatre, but he does not believe that live productions translate to film very well. As one of the company’s core artists, he is driven to create work that reminds us of how similar the early-modern period is to our own.
A proud alumnus of Dalhousie University’s English programme and the University of Toronto’s Graduate Centre for Study of Drama, Dan has also worked with many local companies, such as Shakespeare by the Sea, Lions Den Theatre, the Doppler Effect, and Us Vs Them Theatre Cooperative. He is constantly amazed by the breadth and quality of work that the Halifax theatre community produces. An active playwright, Dan has had several of his own works staged locally: two of his past fringe shows ⎯ Wake Up, Rosie! (2014) and Criminal Negligee (2013) ⎯ were awarded “Best All Ages Show” and “Best Playwright,” respectively. He currently sits on the board of Theatre Nova Scotia.
COLLEEN MACISAAC: ARTISTIC PRODUCER Colleen officially joined The Villain’s Theatre team in the fall of 2009, and has been performing, production managing, and doing graphic design and administrative work for the company ever since. An interdisciplinary artist, she has always been fascinated by plays of heightened language, and intrigued by how our history shapes what we create. She has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator with local theatre companies such as secret theatre, Zuppa Theatre Co, and DaPoPo Theatre, and as a performer with Us vs Them Theatre Cooperative, Lions Den Theatre, and Taboo Theatre. She is the managing director of 2b theatre company, the creator of the HIT LIST, and serves as the chair of the board of the Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative.
