Character Descriptions:

Anna Tap (20-40, female) is kind, extroverted, and keenly interested in the lives of those around her. She possesses a dry wit and speaks frankly and clearly at all times. Anna suffers from a condition similar to glaucoma, and she loses her sight over the course of the play. Note: this role is being reserved for someone who identifies as blind or partially sighted. Performers of all genders who are interested in playing a female character are encouraged to apply.

The Porter (30-60, male) is the sinister custodian of Observatory Mansions. He hates everyone who lives in the building and communicates largely through hissing. He is also known for developing dangerous obsessions with the women who live around him. Performers of all genders who are interested in playing a male character are encouraged to apply.

Claire Higg (40-60, female) is a recluse who is obsessed with soap operas and imagines herself living in them. She never turns off her TV and idealizes the glamorous and indulgent lifestyles of her fictional friends, which harshly contrast with her own real, lonely, ugly life. While ostensibly withdrawn, Claire can also be sweet and gregarious for the right person. Performers of all genders who are interested in playing a female character are encouraged to apply.

Father (40-70, male) spends the first half of the play in a self-induced coma, only to suddenly awaken in time to reflect upon the history of Observatory Mansions and expose its dark secrets. He is tormented by his past actions and prefers to watch the stars and planets above him. Performers of all genders who are interested in playing a male character are encouraged to apply.

Observatory Mansions is a theatrical adaptation of the novel by Edward Carey. A synopsis of the book can be found here.
